Lawful cities will strictly enforce their laws against those who are considered criminals.


Indicates whether the wielding (carrying in hand) of weapons in public is considered an offense. Weapons brandished in city outskirt regions do not constitute a violation of this law. PCs within the nobility or royalty social classes may carry weapons freely in any city. Weapons violations carry a minor penalty.


Indicates whether citizens react to characters of criminal social status.


Indicates whether killing another PC is considered murder. In addition, attacking a guard or NPC within a city or its outskirts is considered attempted murder and will immediately send the offender to jail. Murder carries a heavy penalty.

Hated Races

Hated races are forbidden access to particular cities. They will be detained on sight and all gold will be confiscated.

Breaking the Law

Those who break the law will usually suffer a penalty to their Social Status and will incur a fine in the form of debt (see Understanding Tariffs). As debt grows (and/or social status falls), the following events become more likely:

  • Nothing: Nobody notices the offender.
  • Warned/Ignored: Citizens or guards will warn the offender or refuse to deal with them.
  • Arrested: The offender will be arrested and taken to the local jail.

Note: Breaking a conversation while being detained or refusing to answer in a timely manner is considered non-cooperation with the guard/NPC, and results in greatly increased fines.

Debt vs. Social Status

These are both very related factors. Debt decreases your social status and may make an otherwise normal citizen be considered a criminal. In turn, the possession of debt decreases your social status over time.

Thus you may have zero debt, but still be considered a criminal if you have a low social standing.

Likewise, if you have a high social status, you may be considered a criminal if you possess a large amount of debt..

Use the Adventurer’s Journal to view your current social status and debt. If you are of criminal status and/or possess a large debt, you may want to avoid lawful cities or take action to regain your reputation.

Going to Jail

Once imprisoned, all offenses committed to that point determine your ultimate fate.

You can approach the magistrate at any time to plead your case. Since this is the only sure way out of jail, the magistrate must be faced at some point. The magistrate will fine you an amount of gold equal to any outstanding debt (fines are included in this amount) in order for you to clear your name.

Upon release, gold will be taken to cover any outstanding fines and you will be escorted to the city outskirts.

If you clear your name by paying off your debt or fines you will no longer be harassed by local law enforcement agents. However, if you lack sufficient funds to clear your name, your reputation will remain poor and you may continue to be arrested on sight in that city.

Note: The one exception to this is Hated Races. If you are arrested for being a hated race, all gold in your possession is confiscated and this is not subtracted from your current debt. You are then released to the city outskirts.


Faction determines how creatures and NPCs relate to PCs. In The North, a number of competing and cooperating factions exist and intermingle. For example, most surface races react with hostility to Drow. However, Drow and the Zhentarim are friendly to each other.

On the chart below, a list of the major factions of The North can be found. By default, all factions are friendly to themselves.

* This faction comprises all animals of The North. Though many of these will attack characters on sight, some such as herbivores will not provoke an attack, and in many cases will flee rather than fight back if attacked.

** The Citizen faction comprises all residents of cities and towns. This includes commoners, guards, and merchants that can be found in and around city areas. Despite being non-hostile, a Citizen spotting a race or member of an organization considered to be hostile to that city might call the city watch. Characters of an evil subterranean race or who join one of the various organizations automatically inherit the likes/dislikes of that faction as shown above regardless of alignment.
